Doctor joined the conference <5:58:03 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient joined the conference <5:58:03 PM> Paul Hershberger joined the conference <5:58:03 PM> John Donnelly joined the conference <5:58:03 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: hi <5:58:15 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: well while John's going to the lab to get some blood drawn I just wanted to bring up a little bit of a concern that I had when I was looking at his growth charts <5:58:27 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: he appears to be you know a little bit heavier than most of the children that are his height would be he's currently in the 95th percentile for height and he's averaged for weight so he's a little bit heavier than we would expect at this point what do you make of kind of John's height and weight <5:58:40 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I mean I don't really consider him heavy he does have a little <5:58:52 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: mean he's definitely I guess <5:58:55 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: bigger than other kids I mean <5:58:58 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: we do our best I guess I'd rather <5:59:02 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I don't know I've <5:59:05 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: it makes me a little nervous because he struggles at school and stuff and even like at the dinner table like try to get him to eat healthy stuff but <5:59:05 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: he just <5:59:06 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: Okay so <5:59:14 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: doesn't really eat it that well so I'd rather him eat something than nothing <5:59:20 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: yeah I mean like when we sit down at the dinner table usually I mean I like to eat healthy so I I've always loved grilled chicken broccoli like I love eating that stuff I mean obviously occasionally something unhealthy but he's just never been <5:59:23 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: kind of concerned that maybe he wouldn't eat anything if you didn't give him it sounded like maybe he's eating some unhealthy Foods is that what I'm gathering <5:59:48 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: one to like it he throws a fit if we sit down at the dinner table and he has broccoli in front of him or carrots or cauliflower like he <5:59:58 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: he doesn't at this point it's almost like not even worth trying because it's just a never-ending battle every night <5:59:59 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: well I do commend you for trying I think it can be difficult when kids don't want to you know eat the healthy food that's put in front of them but I kind of wanted to talk a little bit more about <6:00:11 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: yeah I mean we kind of <6:00:11 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: just <6:00:18 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: you said he throws tantrums when he you guys try to make me healthier foods or like broccoli vegetables things like that <6:00:28 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: kind of I don't want to say we gave up but we're kind of taking a break from trying it but yeah any time like if we would try and feed him <6:00:35 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: would just be it's just I don't know how to explain it he just looks at it kind of <6:00:38 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: yeah it sounds like it's exhausting <6:00:42 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I don't want to say cries but he'll yell like I'm not eating this I don't want this give me real food just like stuff like that <6:00:50 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: so we kind of <6:00:52 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: hasn't been doing it as much now because we just give them normally what he wants but <6:00:57 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: it is <6:01:01 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: okay <6:01:05 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: when you do decide you know we'll give up on the broccoli or the vegetables for the night does it <6:01:05 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: kind of <6:01:14 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: just feel like it makes things <6:01:16 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: sorry does it feel like it makes things easier <6:01:19 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I mean yeah it's it's like I said it's kind of the point where <6:01:21 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: okay <6:01:27 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I <6:01:27 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: we've tried for so long and it just nothing is getting better like we try and give it to him every day and it just he just it's the same result every time so I think <6:01:38 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: to board it in the sense that we've given up but I guess that's as I'm sitting here talking it out it kind of sounds like it <6:01:46 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I mean I guess the big one for me is like diabetes like I don't want my son to have diabetes or not have a pancreas that works for whatever it is <6:01:48 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: um with you know John being a little overweight for his height what do you know about some of the potential health concerns that could arise later on <6:02:09 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: so you're concerned a little bit about his physical health and it sounds like you're also concerned about kind of his Social Development or mental health as well <6:02:11 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: get <6:02:11 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I I think for me that's less of a concern the biggest concern is just the way he gets treated at school obviously the health issues concerned me but I feel like that's something he's young that's something that if we can eventually <6:02:25 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: to eat better and lose some weight <6:02:28 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: like the the not really being able to play out side without <6:02:33 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: fear of like getting made fun of for him <6:02:36 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: being overweight <6:02:38 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: yeah <6:02:47 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: okay <6:02:51 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: you said you're kind of exhausted with this this situation or you know it gets tough sometimes you think it's not worth it if you don't make kind of some <6:03:01 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: changes that lead John towards maybe a healthier life what what do you see in the future for him and your family <6:03:12 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I don't know it worries me like maybe like maybe one day he'll mean he already is losing most of his friends because they like just says overweight and he just doesn't really want to go outside so <6:03:14 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: you <6:03:26 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I guess my biggest fear is just that he'll have no friends and then like I said he will <6:03:26 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: have to <6:03:31 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: pills or insulin or whatever all that stuff is for diabetes I don't know but I guess that would be <6:03:37 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: okay yeah I think valid fears I think you said you've tried to make some changes but if we could buckle down and kind of make some of those changes how do you think that would look for John <6:03:38 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: that's my biggest fear <6:03:40 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: um <6:03:55 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: he will the issues like trying like <6:03:59 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: the changes have been in the negative and like he's been eating less healthy stuff so like <6:04:04 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: the issue is making changes in the positive direction like getting him to drink or eat healthy stuff <6:04:06 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: okay <6:04:11 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: yeah I mean <6:04:15 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: kind <6:04:15 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: so you know I guess I'm just trying to <6:04:19 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: asked <6:04:21 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: you've said you're worried about the diabetes you said that you know you're worried about the the friends playing outside and stuff what do you think his life would look like if we were able to kind of get him you know more able to eat some healthy foods maybe play outside a little bit more things like that <6:04:38 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: okay so it sounds like <6:04:38 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: you know <6:04:40 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: I don't want to be like an overbearing parent when I say this but maybe like he'll do things that I did when I was a kid like play sports play baseball football soccer whatever and like go over to friends houses and stay the night <6:04:53 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: and then <6:04:55 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: leaders the biggest fear of Health Wise is just like the diabetes to me <6:05:00 PM> Joel Spenny - Patient: but yeah maybe that it'll be more like easier of a social life on him <6:05:06 PM> Paul Hershberger: I'm gonna stop you here <6:05:07 PM> Cole Stevens - Doctor: it would also impact oh okay <6:05:09 PM> Paul Hershberger: I just want to be cognizant of our time so <6:05:15 PM> Paul Hershberger: your thoughts Cole ________________________________________________________________________________ End of transcript at Aug 26, 2025, 6:05:19 PM
