Patient joined the conference <7:24:13 PM> Aneesh - Doctor joined the conference <7:24:13 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: here Paul so one of the things I wanted to discuss <7:24:22 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: is Max's weight it's one of the kind of benchmarks we like to look for look at for growing kids and we want his percentile for height and weight to kind of match and recently I've been noticing that you know it's in the 95th percentile for weight and just the 50th percentile for height so it's been a concern of mine how do you kind of feel about that <7:24:41 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: well yeah I'm certainly aware that Max is <7:24:47 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: kind of heavy I guess I am assuming and hoping he'll just outgrow it <7:24:54 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: he's very picky about what he eats so we kind of give him what he wants so at least he's eating something <7:25:03 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: it's tell me a little bit more about that <7:25:08 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: it seems like whatever either my wife and I fix for dinner <7:25:11 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: here <7:25:14 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: it's pretty rare that Max wants to eat well we've prepared <7:25:14 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: <7:25:19 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: try to have reasonably healthy diets so <7:25:22 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: of Chicken vegetables <7:25:25 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: he <7:25:26 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: some fruit Maybe <7:25:28 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: and and Max it's sort of like he's upset if we're not having hot dogs or <7:25:34 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: hamburgers and fries or chicken nuggets <7:25:40 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: he often will say you know what's for dessert first thing <7:25:46 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: yeah um what kind of things are you concerned about in the future for max if nothing really changes <7:25:55 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: well like I said I'm hoping he'll just outgrow <7:26:01 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: grow I kind of grow into <7:26:03 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: knows he gets taller that <7:26:06 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: so I <7:26:06 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: you know maybe his weight and his height will even out a little bit so <7:26:11 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: you know since since that's what I'm hoping I really don't think about what would happen if that doesn't occur <7:26:17 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: are there is there anything you're noticing right now that's kind of becoming a problem <7:26:29 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: well <7:26:32 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: we'd like him to eat better I mean like I said we're we try to be fairly health conscious and so we want him to be healthy <7:26:41 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: we are a little bit concerned that he's <7:26:45 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: he didn't say too much about it but he's mentioned a couple things it sounds like he might be getting <7:26:52 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: a little bit about his size <7:26:56 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: how is he kind of felt about that what is he told you <7:27:07 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: well he <7:27:10 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: I don't know if it's been more than one kid but <7:27:14 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: you <7:27:14 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: there was a time where not too long ago where <7:27:20 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: it was a parent of one of his friends had called and said hey Max want to come over and play and we we asked Max and he said <7:27:29 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: whatever this other kids name is has kind of been mean to me and we said what mean to you and always just kind of making fun saying I'm fat <7:27:39 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: so so that clearly that had an effect on him and you know we don't like that certainly <7:27:43 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: um what kind of effect <7:27:47 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: well just the fact that he didn't want to go <7:27:56 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: go and play so <7:27:58 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: and if if other kids are doing that then <7:28:03 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: you know <7:28:05 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: that begins to <7:28:07 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: limit <7:28:09 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: I guess <7:28:10 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: size of his friends groups and <7:28:13 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: you know <7:28:15 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: maybe he'll start getting left out of things that we would hope that he'd be involved with or that he wants to do those those things <7:28:24 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: yeah so it sounds like they're starting to be some signs that it might be affecting Max <7:28:32 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: what kind of <7:28:32 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: um <7:28:34 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: to have you guys tried so far <7:28:43 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: well we try to <7:28:46 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: I'd you know to give him what we've prepared to eat ourselves <7:28:51 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: um so we we try that <7:28:55 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: and we'll say you know just give it a try <7:29:00 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: then it seems like the more we encourage him the more he <7:29:05 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: says no no no and then starts to cry and <7:29:11 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: stomping around I don't like this I don't like this and <7:29:16 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: I want <7:29:18 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: I'm going to go get some chips or whatever he can get in the cupboard and <7:29:22 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: mm-hmm <7:29:24 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: so <7:29:25 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: you know we're tired at some point we just kind of give in and <7:29:30 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: figure okay well <7:29:32 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: better have something in a stomach than going to bed hungry <7:29:32 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: oh yeah that sounds like it can be pretty exhausting on both of you especially if it's if it's happening happening regularly what kind of things have worked for you guys <7:29:35 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: um that's a tough one because I'm not sure anything's worked <7:29:54 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: in terms of him eating better <7:29:58 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: yeah <7:30:00 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: okay <7:30:01 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: a <7:30:02 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: is there anything that you guys thought about doing or that was on your minds that you haven't yet done <7:30:11 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: up I guess you know as we're talking about this I think I think we've just <7:30:22 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: tried to convince ourselves that this is a phase and that he'll <7:30:27 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: as it gets older he won't be so picky and <7:30:33 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: like I said then his weight and his height will even out a little bit more <7:30:36 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: yeah absolutely that's something that's something that could happen I bring it up because I did something I'm getting more concerned about <7:30:51 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: know childhood obesity can have some long-term effects so I think you guys are right to be a little bit worried about it and getting more worried about it <7:31:01 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: um <7:31:01 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: up well <7:31:01 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: we <7:31:06 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: Max <7:31:06 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: willing would you be to start being a little a little harder and a little stricter about making sure <7:31:14 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: what he needs <7:31:19 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: wanted to be a happy kid so it's not like we <7:31:23 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: you know and <7:31:23 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: something <7:31:25 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: seem right to send your kid to bed hungry <7:31:30 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: is there anything like finding <7:31:36 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: finding healthier Stacks that you thought about <7:31:41 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: with I we've actually tried that you know baked chips or something instead of regular chips and <7:31:51 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: he knows he <7:31:54 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: these don't taste right <7:31:57 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: so I guess we've we just tend to give in <7:32:03 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: yeah if it kind of continues and he didn't really even out as he as he grew what kind of concerns do you have about what that looks like <7:32:13 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: oh well like I said I really don't want to think about that I guess <7:32:20 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: you know I yeah I'm I'm <7:32:24 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: understand that <7:32:26 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: if if he continues to be <7:32:30 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: overweight that he's more susceptible to health problems he's more susceptible to being bullied <7:32:36 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: so you know neither my wife or I want want any of that <7:32:41 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: it sounds like you guys want to do the the best for Macs and at what point do you think <7:32:51 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: I guess <7:32:54 PM> Aneesh - Doctor: um you'd be more worried about it and you'd want to take action <7:33:03 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: here I guess if it became clear that <7:33:08 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: he was an outgrowing out growing this <7:33:14 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: I think that's <7:33:16 PM> Paul Hershberger - Patient: that's probably one we'd be more more inclined to want to take action ________________________________________________________________________________ End of transcript at Dec 9, 2025, 7:33:24 PM
