Doctor joined the conference <3:12:02 PM> Ananya - Patient joined the conference <3:12:02 PM> Paul Hershberger joined the conference <3:12:05 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: so <3:12:05 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: okay all right <3:12:10 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: on you looks like most for the most part John is doing pretty well pretty healthy my only concern is that his his weight is in the 95th percentile so talk to me about that what do you think <3:12:16 PM> Ananya - Patient: um well that seems a little high because my other kids have been you know not in that high of a percentile so I was kind of wondering about that because I noticed he is definitely eating a lot more than he used to <3:12:36 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm <3:12:43 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: uh what kind of things are is he eating <3:12:43 PM> Ananya - Patient: well he is probably my pickiest Eater of my children I try to give them you know fruits and veggies whatever we for dinner but he just he doesn't want it <3:12:46 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: how do you think that that kind of <3:13:00 PM> Ananya - Patient: trailer <3:13:04 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: increased weight could affect John <3:13:06 PM> Ananya - Patient: being <3:13:06 PM> Ananya - Patient: well it's probably bad considering I mean for his height it's it seems like it's like he weighs a lot comparatively so I mean I don't want him to have you know health conditions down the line like diabetes or even just <3:13:08 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm okay <3:13:24 PM> Ananya - Patient: overweight into adulthood so I mean I would love to change it I just I'm not really sure how <3:13:33 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: and how do you foresee things going if you were to have like a condition like diabetes or something like that in the future <3:13:42 PM> Ananya - Patient: um I think it would be difficult because I probably have to help manage it and I'm you know very busy with work and so is his dad but we would want to make sure he's you know taking care of but he's he doesn't seem like a child that's really you know good at his self-responsibility he has to be reminded a lot to do things so I just don't think it would be something good for him long term <3:14:02 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: here <3:14:04 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm <3:14:06 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: okay so I'm hearing that he's a bit of a picky eater and maybe not quite as easy as you might say as your other children <3:14:19 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: is there any other reason you think <3:14:23 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: it might be kind of difficult to change his weight <3:14:29 PM> Ananya - Patient: um I mean lately it seems like he's been throwing these huge temper tantrums if he doesn't get what he wants like if I say no to soda or if I tell him to eat some carrots and stuff a bag of chips he just will not have it so I feel like that's been pretty difficult <3:14:32 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: oh <3:14:43 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm so I hear you've tried at least some strategies like carrots and set of chips what other strategies do you think you could implement or have implemented for positive change <3:14:51 PM> Ananya - Patient: um well since I know he likes to snack more than eating actual meals I've been trying to give him healthier snacks instead of the ones he would prefer to eat but sometimes it's just hit or miss on if he wants to eat the healthier snack or his unhealthy snacks so I don't know if I've been very successful with that but <3:14:51 PM> Ananya - Patient: I don't know <3:15:00 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: here <3:15:24 PM> Ananya - Patient: even he just recently started drinking soda so I keep telling him to drink water instead but he just he won't listen <3:15:30 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm um <3:15:35 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: what kind of things do you think you could do to potentially prevent him from drinking soda or snacking as much <3:15:44 PM> Ananya - Patient: um <3:15:45 PM> Ananya - Patient: for soda I think I can maybe just try to limit how much he drinks right now because I don't think he'll be able to stop all at once so maybe if we limit it to one to two days a week that could work I just I don't know what I'm gonna do if he keeps doing these temper tantrums <3:15:59 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm what do you think about the availability of his <3:15:59 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: snacks <3:16:11 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: and access to soda <3:16:14 PM> Ananya - Patient: um I mean I I do buy the snacks he likes even though they're unhealthy and I guess I do keep buying the soda as well so maybe I could change that by just buying less of them and trying to buy more of healthier drinks and snacks and see if that works but <3:16:33 PM> Ananya - Patient: yeah <3:16:34 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: yeah I guess on a scale of 1 to 10 how do you help prepare do you think you are to make make these changes for John's health <3:16:45 PM> Ananya - Patient: um <3:16:45 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm yeah so from what I'm hearing like you care a lot about your child's health you don't want to see negative outcomes in the future like diabetes and you you want him to keep fitting in with his friends so why do you think you're not higher than a six on that scale <3:16:48 PM> Ananya - Patient: like a six I mean I've been thinking about it a lot lately because he also has been telling me that some of his friends don't want to play with him because they're making fun of his weight so that makes me feel like I do need to make a change <3:17:17 PM> Ananya - Patient: um probably just because I've tried to make some small changes like I said like trying to give them you know different fruits and veggies for snacks and it I mean sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't so I just feel like that's kind of <3:17:25 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: mm-hmm it's very valid being a parent is hard every child is different <3:17:31 PM> Ananya - Patient: preventing me from <3:17:33 PM> Ananya - Patient: like I can make more of a change <3:17:36 PM> Ananya - Patient: um <3:17:42 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: what <3:17:45 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: what other behavioral kind of changes do you think you could make outside of just food for his benefit <3:17:55 PM> Ananya - Patient: I guess we could I maybe I can talk to him about his <3:18:00 PM> Ananya - Patient: behavior when he doesn't get what he wants just so he knows that if he like he can't continue to do that like I need to kind of I guess be more strong when he throws a temper tantrum and not give him what he wants because usually that's what I tend to do so that it gets him to stop like screaming and crying so when we're out in public but maybe we just need to have a talk about that I guess <3:18:04 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: product rule <3:18:10 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: three three <3:18:17 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: okay and do you think there's anything else going on that might be contributing to this I know you mentioned his friends at school any other stressors that could be impacting his tantrums and kind of eating lifestyle <3:18:37 PM> Ananya - Patient: here not that I can think of I mean he seems to be a generally happy <3:18:47 PM> Ananya - Patient: eight year old and he enjoys school for the most part too so it doesn't seem like anything is going wrong from what I can perceive <3:18:52 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: okay well I guess overall then it seems like we've identified that this is kind of a concern that we both share about him for several reasons and <3:19:06 PM> Ian Carmody - Doctor: you're you're willing you've come up with some some options that we could make to improve ________________________________________________________________________________ End of transcript at Mar 9, 2026, 3:19:16 PM
